Players, Managers and Football community pay emotional tribute to Gianluigi Buffon

Gianluigi Buffon ended his 17-year Juventus career as they crowned a seventh straight Italian title with a 2-1 win over relegated Verona.

The 40-year-old keeper was substituted just after the hour, and was in tears as he embraced his team-mates while the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Before kick-off, the Italian was greeted onto the pitch with a banner bearing his face. He then mingled with fans, accepting congratulations and gifts from the Curva Sud.

The whole Football Community will miss the Italian legend, who is arguably the best goalkeeper in the history of the game.

Players, Managers and the other biggest names in football, have their say on the departing goalkeeper –

Alessandro Del Piero –

Today is your moment, Gigi. It’s the day in which at the Stadium you looked everyone in the eyes, shaking off the tears as you saluted your fans for the last time. You lifted another trophy of a legendary and infinite career that I was privileged enough to experience with you for half my life. You have been, you all have been, magnificent. Saluting like this is the best of the best.

Fabio Capello –

Gigi is a great man and has the courage to say things without hiding. I could select two whole teams, but Buffon would be the only player in both of them.

Claudio Marchisio –

When you arrived, I was little more than a child with many dreams and clear ideas, knowing well the value of carrying the bag for those who were bigger than me.Β Following you every day, I understood the player I wanted to be and the values that would accompany my life as a man. Everyone in life meets people who they receive far more from than they can ever give back, and you are one of those figures for me. Your words were always on point, but at times you just needed a glance. The same glance that today I’ll meet for the last time in the locker room. The way you loved our colours will remain inspirational for entire generations. The latest replay of your Press conference just concluded. No good, it’s always the same ending!

Massimiliano Allegri –

Buffon is a champion, and I think he’s the best goalkeeper ever. Now, he’ll decide what to do. We have to celebrate the Scudetto and Coppa Italia first, as well as his 20 years at Juventus.

Andrea Barzagli –

Gigi is a big brother. I have always told him everything and we have a great rapport. We’ll miss him, he’s a leader and the greatest goalkeeper of all time. He is a man who in the locker room lets everyone take a step up in quality. He never says anything without thinking it over and everyone listens.

Mehdi Benatia –

Β There are players here who every day show you what it’s like to live within Juve.Β I am sad that the captain is leaving. I’ve played with many champions, but Gigi is special, both on and off the field. His departure really does leave a hole in Juventus.
