Football Fans pay tribute to the departing Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon announced on Thursday that he will leave the Turin giants after 17 years, but did not declare the end of his playing career and may continue his pursuit of winning the Champions League somewhere else.

The former Parma goalkeeper will make his 640th Serie A appearance against Verona in Turin. Buffon said he would like to take more time to reflect on his future which could be either on or off the pitch.

Over a career spanning 23 years, the shot-stopper has so far turned out for just two clubs, starting at Parma before Juventus signed him for โ‚ฌ52 million in 2001, making him the most expensive goalkeeper ever, a title that he holds to this day.

The 40-year-old, who has been capped 176 times by Italy, captained Juve to a seventh successive Serie A title and to Coppa Italia glory this season.ย He has won nine Serie A titles, and a further two were stripped from the club due to the โ€˜Calciopoliโ€™ scandal. He was a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, where he saved a match winning header of Zinedine Zidane in the Final against France.
